Empower clients to move from hesitation to action through empathy, not pressure
Career development professionals often meet clients who feel stuck, uncertain about taking the next step or ambivalent about change, especially when expectations from others add pressure. This hesitation is common, yet it can be misread as resistance, leaving even experienced practitioners unsure how to respond effectively.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) offers a powerful, client-centred approach that helps career professionals respond to ambivalence with empathy and skill. Rather than pushing for change, MI helps clients uncover their own reasons for making meaningful career and life decisions.
This interactive workshop will introduce you to the core principles and strategies of Motivational Interviewing, equipping you with tools to guide productive conversations and build your clients’ internal motivation. You’ll walk away with practical techniques you can use immediately to support clients in creating and committing to their own goals.
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
Describe the foundational principles of Motivational Interviewing
Recognize signs of ambivalence and resistance in career conversations
Identify and respond to “change talk” in your clients
Apply strategies that strengthen a client’s motivation for career or life transitions
Engage in a dynamic learning experience that includes:
Presentations and case study examples
Demonstration videos
Experiential practice and small group discussions
Personal reflection activities
Bonus: Registration includes access to an e-manual.
This workshop will be eligible for 6 credits towards your CCDP maintenance.
